Tell Me More…

Pregnancy acupuncture, also known as obstetric acupuncture, is a gentle, safe, and drug-free approach that can be a game-changer during your pregnancy. This clinically effective and cost-efficient method addresses a wide range of pregnancy-related concerns, from relieving morning sickness to preparing the body for a smoother labor and delivery.

Why Choose Pregnancy Acupuncture?

Pregnancy acupuncture can be beneficial in addressing several common pregnancy-related symptoms and is a low-risk, drug-free approach.

What can it help with?

Acupuncture treatments can be a great tool you during your pregnancy by helping with:

  • Nausea & Vomiting: Many expectant mothers experience morning sickness during early pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations. Acupuncture offers them some relief, helping them feel more in control during this challenging phase.
  • Fatigue and Headaches: The metabolic changes required for placenta production, coupled with heightened hormone levels, often result in fatigue and headaches during the first trimester. Acupuncture can significantly improved these symptoms.
  • Heartburn/Acid Reflux: As pregnancy progresses, heartburn can become a regular occurrence. Acupuncture can offer relief from this discomfort, providing a welcome respite from the discomfort associated with acid reflux.
  • Hemorrhoids and Constipation: Hemorrhoids are a common discomfort during pregnancy due to increased pressure on the veins of the large intestine. Constipation can also be an issue. Acupuncture can effectively alleviate these issues, reducing discomfort.
  • Stress, Sleeping Problems, and Elevated Blood Pressure: Pregnancy can be a stressful time. Acupuncture can help reduce anxiety and stress, promoted better sleep quality, and lowered blood pressure.
  • Musculoskeletal Pain: The physical changes during pregnancy, including weight gain and hormonal alterations, can result in pain in areas such as the hips, back, and sciatic region. Acupuncture is a valuable tool for addressing these musculoskeletal issues.
  • Position of Breech Babies: Sessions of moxibustion and acupuncture can encourage babies to assume the correct position for birth, as supported by success rates of up to 85% in turning breech babies.
  • Preparing the Body for Labor and Delivery: Acupuncture in the final weeks of pregnancy can prepare the body for the challenges of labor and delivery. It reduces anxiety, promotes cervical ripening, and enhances energy levels for labor.
  • Induction for Delayed Labor: Research shows that acupuncture can help induce and shorten the length of labor, with fewer medical interventions like epidurals or C-sections for women who receive pregnancy acupuncture.

Treatments

Your first visit with me is an hour, while follow-up treatments are 50 minutes.

Initial Appointment: What to Expect

At Acupuncture by Jena, I value the importance of your initial visit, which begins with an in-depth consultation.

During this consultation, I ask a ton of detailed questions with each question being integral in shaping the ideal therapy tailored to your specific needs.

Then acupuncture points are skillfully selected based on your unique requirements and desired outcomes.

During your acupuncture session, fine needles are gently inserted and are typically left in place for approximately 25-45 minutes. This allows you to relax in the soothing ambiance of the treatment room, where your comfort is a priority.

Subsequent visits are generally shorter in duration and typically do not include a full consultation. Instead, I may engage in a brief discussion about the progress you’ve experienced and the changes and improvements you may have noticed in various aspects of your well-being, such as sleep quality, mood, and stress levels. This ongoing dialogue helps us ensure that your treatment plan remains aligned with your evolving needs and goals.

Frequency of Sessions

The frequency of acupuncture sessions depends on your individual situation. Treatment may be recommended for a short duration or weekly/ biweekly to best support your pregnancy.

FAQ

Is Acupuncture Safe During Pregnancy?

Many people ask acupuncture is safe during pregnancy. The answer is a resounding yes!!! When administered by a properly trained acupuncturist who avoids certain points on your body, acupuncture carries no more risk for pregnant women than for anyone else.

Beginning acupuncture in the early stages of your first trimester can provide relief for many of the discomforts associated with pregnancy. Acupuncture may even aid in preventing miscarriages for women with a history of pregnancy loss.

When should I start pre-labour treatments?

You can start at any time. Its recommended to start at 36 weeks, but don’t worry if it’s later than that…any acupuncture is better than none.

Does it hurt?

No, acupuncture is virtually painless. The needles used are fine and flexible, often compared to a human hair or a cat whisker. Most people find acupuncture extremely relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment.
